Tuesday, 29 May 2007

Global warming is now highlighted as one of the important topics in the Natural Resources Management (NRM) Seminars conducted by ELAC beginning this year.  This is in response to the “Call for Action on Climate Change” which is theme in this years Earth Day Celebration.

Fishermen, coal mining workers, women’s group, youth, barangay and municipal officials were among the sectors reached out by ELAC Cebu Area Office through its series of Natural Resources Management (NRM) Seminars conducted in 13 towns and two cities in the province of Cebu since last year.

Together with ELAC Tacloban Area Office, the team also conducted the seminar in the town of Palo in Leyte.

The NRM Seminar aims to deepen awareness of various sectors on the environmental situation and their responsibility as stewards of the God-given resources.

ELAC conducted the NRM seminars in Ginatilan (LGU and National High School), Talisay City, Carmen, Catmon, San Remigio, Medellin, Daanbantayan, Danao City, Bogo, Brgy. Langub (Malapascua), Minglanilla (Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish & San Roque Parish). NRM with Global warming topics: Dalaguete, Liloan and for Global Warming only: Brgy. Langub (Malapascua), Boljoon, Camotes Island- Tudela, Kawit & Poro.

On April 21, ELAC Cebu Area Office, Cebu Alliance for Renewable Energy (CARE), Rotary Club of Mandaue,  and Worldwide Fund for Nature sponsored the showing of the “An Inconvenient Truth” in SM Cebu as part of the celebration of Earth Day 2007.  Through this documentary film, former US Vice President Al Gore presented an eye-opening and compelling view of the future of our planet – and our civilization.  On April 22, ELAC Cebu also conducted a lecture-video presentation on climate change to the children of informal dwellers in the North Reclamation area in Cebu City.

The ELAC team is composed of Sr. Luz Dolalas, RSCJ, Joy Caseres, and Erick Auza.  The team is also assisted by two interns from the College of Law of the University of San Carlos (USC) beginning summer of this year.  The team continues to do research and networking to meet the challenges brought about by the recent local and global environmental situation.
